Societies form for the common protection of each other. Some provide that protection externally while others provide it internally. Still others use those protections for other ends (both good and evil). Without that external protection the society gets invaded. The only country that doesn't need a military is one in which no one wants to live therefore no one will attack it. The military is what keeps a guy with a stick from conquering the society. Jealousy not retaliation is the most common reason for attacking another country.There is a trust between service members and populace, "We're willing to sacrifice everything for your defense so use us wisely." We have ignored that deal for the last 50 years. We shouldn't deploy troops as a half measure- we need to mean it when we commit to a fight. The only peace with honor is called victory.

I sure hope the dude is okay and can recover to continue playing the sport he loved.I suppose every sport has some level of risk involved, you could count up the ways a player risks serious injury or even death in just about every sport and be surprised even when weighing the odds how high the probability can still be. With hockey we can spare no exception, it should seem obvious you know. Big ass sticks with fairly sharp edges being wielded about to hit a puck that isn't forgiving to any object that gets in the way of its path. Obviously magnified by the strength of the players behind those objects who play with such intensity that it sometimes leads to all-out brawling, much to the joy and encouragement of the fans. Oh yeah, and the large steel blades on the end of their feet that have been proven in the past, and in this case to have no aversion to slicing right to through flesh when the opportunity presents itself. You gotta have big balls to play hockey.!

Isn't this the hallmark of American conflicts? Everyone is all gung-ho to support the troops until it means putting your money where your mouth is whether it's to ensure they get the care they need at the VA hospital to deal with post conflict injuries (mental or physical).I was against the Iraq war from the very beginning but I find it sickening that people I know who supported the war seem to not have a care in the world about what happened to the men and women who went over there and came back with problems.
